Description:
Join Institute Co-Chair David Cohen and special guest speakers Professors Patrick Kline, Evan Rose, and Christopher Walters for a members-only webinar. Kline, Rose, and Walters are economic professors whose research was profiled in the recent New York Times article, What Researchers Discovered When They Sent 80,000 Fake Résumés to U.S. Jobs.
Guest Speakers’ Webinar Description:
We discuss the insights gleaned from our research on nationwide patterns of potential discrimination by large employers. Our analysis relies on a massive correspondence experiment that sent thousands of fictitious resumes to entry level jobs at over 100 Fortune 500 companies, using distinctive names to signal race and sex. While discrimination against Black names is widespread, many companies do not discriminate; we discuss who these companies are and what they seem to be doing right. Sex discrimination is highly concentrated among a small minority of firms, with some preferring women and other preferring men. Strategies for combating these biases are introduced and we discuss the potential for cooperative audits to map and mitigate organizational biases.
